Billionaires and Bloggers

Giving Away Money is Fun

The Democratic Party has lost interest in “big ideas” writes University of Virginia political scientist James Caesar in the Weekly Standard. Like Matt Bai, Ceaser looks at “the progressive coalition of billionaires and bloggers” struggling to control the Democratic Party. The coalition of billionaires like George Soros and Steven Gluckstern, who bankrolled the Democracy Alliance, blogs like Daily Kos and MyDD, and “internet-reliant grassroots organizations like and ACORN” lacks a comprehensive vision. It’s a hodgepodge of energy, anger and specific fixes clustered around a deep pessimism about America in particular, and modernity in general.

As we have pointed out on this blog, giving money away is an increasingly popular way for the very wealthy to distinguish themselves. Gluckstern agrees: “I don’t really care about money. I mean, I like it. You can do fun things with it. You can give it away.”
