Who Is Alex Soros? Ask CRC

Four days ago George Soros announced that he had turned over control of his financial and nonprofit empire to his son Alexander (Alex). George Soros—the Hungarian-born American billionaire who has donated large sums to left-wing institutions and causes—has long been a frequently cursed bogeyman of the Right. But his son is less well known—except in the Biden White House, which he visited at least 15 times between October 2021 and December 2022.

In the scramble to write stories about Alex Soros after the announced transfer, the media turned to CRC to learn about the new boss of the Open Society Network. And they have cited CRC’s research (often InfluenceWatch) and experts extensively. Below is a selection of the media hits:

“George Soros Has Given Up Control of His Empire—And Who He Handed the Reins to Is Much Worse,” Jack Davis, The Western Journal, June 11, 2023:

“Alexander Soros is poised to lead his family’s multibillion-dollar political and philanthropic network,” said Scott Walter, president of Capital Research Center, according to the Washington Examiner.

“Like his father, he cozies up to White House and congressional leaders willing to do the family’s bidding on such issues as crime, immigration, election policy, and more, as the Soroses exploit every type of giving: money to parties, independent expenditure groups, and so-called ‘charities,’” he said. “Meet Alex Soros, the 37-Year-Old Successor Son to the $25 Billion George Soros Empire,” Washington Examiner, Gabe Kaminsky, June 12, 2023:

OSF, which is said to steer roughly $1.5 billion per year in grants to other organizations, has established itself as a dominant force in the tax-exempt giving world. The Open Society Policy Center, an advocacy group affiliated with the broader OSF network, doled out $140 million to left-wing causes in 2021, according to financial disclosures [InfluenceWatch]. This included $16.9 million to America Votes, a voting rights group that calls itself “the coordination hub of the progressive community,” disclosures show.

. . .

“The Left has many Soroses, including the next generation and their foundations,” Scott Walter, president of Capital Research Center, a conservative investigative think tank, told the Washington Examiner. “Alex promises to continue his father’s notoriety.” [emphasis added]

“Elon Musk Blasts Soros and His Son: ‘Destroying Public Safety’ by Funding Woke DAs ‘Needs to Stop,’” Emily Mangiaracina, Lifesite News, June 14, 2023:

Capital Research Center (CRC) has documented how cities and counties across the U.S. have experienced surges in violent crime under Soros-backed DAs, such as Philadelphia, which in 2021, under DA Larry Krasner, became the murder capital of the U.S. among the country’s largest cities.

Writing for CRC, Parker Thayer went so far as to say that “Soros’s influence on left-wing DA candidates is often wildly underestimated,” backing the assertion by listing each Soros-funded DA in office as of 2021, along with instances of upticks in crime under their watch or other instances of notoriety for the DAs.

For example, Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg refused last year to seek prison sentences for crimes such as armed robbery, drug dealing, and burglary, after which more than nine Manhattan prosecutors quit.

Perhaps Soros’ most well-known DA pick, Kim Foxx, oversaw Chicago’s “largest spike in homicides in more than 30 years while her office dropped charges against 30 percent of felony defendants during 2020,” CRC reported. [emphasis added]
