Is Progressive Future Another ACORN in the Making?

Progressive Future has been posting handbills in Washington, D.C. advertising “JOBS TO ELECT OBAMA.”

We’d never heard of the left-wing group that also operates as Work for Progress so we did some research.

It was only founded in 2007 so its tax returns (IRS Form 990) are not yet available at the guidestar.org database. It is headquartered in Denver, Colorado, which has become a hotbed of liberal organizing in recent years. It is a 501(c)(4) organization which means that unlike 527s (issue advocacy groups that don’t explicitly endorse or call for the defeat of candidates) it doesn’t have to provide much in the way of donor disclosure. No grants to the group appear in our philanthropy database.

Progressive Future has been accused of the same bad labor practices that ACORN has been accused of, i.e. not paying workers. (Incidentally, in addition to not paying some of its workers, ACORN has tried to get exempted from the very minimum wage laws that it claims to support.)
