Despite Venezuela’s ongoing political strife, spiraling inflation, and heartwrenching humanitarian crises, large and influential swaths of the American Left have supported the Venezuelan socialist project since Hugo Chavez came to power in 1998. Back then Venezuela’s poverty rate was 55%; today, it is almost 90%.
