The Little-Known Lawsuit Lobby
Robert Stilson on Freedom and Prosperity Radio with Joe Thomas
CRC’s Robert Stilson talks about the Lawsuit Lobby on Freedom and Prosperity Radio with Joe Thomas. Trial lawyers play a prominent role in political debates and lobbying, primarily through American Association for Justice (AAJ), a 501(c)(6) nonprofit. This little-known nonprofit represents more than 20,000 lawyers, and its affiliated political action committee has consistently given 97 percent of its contributions to federal candidates to Democrats.
In particular, the AAJ has long sought a tax break that would allow lawyers who file suits on a contingency fee basis to immediately deduct expenses related to that litigation. The Wall Street Journal called this “the definition of a corrupt political bargain” that would amount to “a direct income transfer to plaintiffs’ lawyers, who will turn around and finance Democratic election campaigns.”
