CRC Media Hits in May 2020

Despite the coronavirus pandemic and its apparently dramatic end in sometimes peaceful protesting (and sometimes sadly violent rioting), May 2020 was still a good month for media exposure for Capital Research Center scholars and researchers. As always, they continued their excellent work of investigating influencers deeply and exposing their special interests widely. May was framed by the coronavirus crisis, the 1619 Project’s agenda, and the misinformation and mythologizing around Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger.

CRC’s office remains closed, not just until Washington, DC, reopens from the pandemic but until unrest abates downtown. Despite this, we remain on the job—as usual. We’ll continue to produce excellent research daily and supply major news outlets and state and local legislators with everything they need to discover how major policy and political influencers are funded and how they relate and interlock.

Below is a non-exhaustive listing of our work in May:

Eric Holder’s Gerrymandering Crusade Is Hypocritical
Philadelphia Inquirer, Hayden Ludwig and Kevin Mooney, May 5, 2020

Holder has been laying the groundwork for his redistricting effort for years. Almost immediately after leaving the Obama administration, he declared that “Congress is broken” thanks to Republicans’ “extreme partisan gerrymandering.” “This creates a Congress driven by primary party politics and ideological extremism,” Holder wrote, “not one accountable to the will of the majority of voters.”

Nurses Using Coronavirus Chaos to Promote Medicare for All
Washington Examiner, Sarah Lee, May 7, 2020

But leave it to Big Labor to swoop in at such a fragile time and exploit the very real crisis (which has become something of a progressive modus operandi) to advocate for their socialist policy ideas. By muddying the waters and sowing discord in the ranks of nurses themselves, while creating a fictional public opposition to their work, labor unions hope to sell the centralized version of healthcare that Big Labor favors: “Medicare for all.” Organized nursing protests are already happening in states around the country organized by the biggest nurses’ union in the country, National Nurses United. Working in conjunction with smaller, state-based unions, the NNU has begun organizing nurses in protests over what they say is a lack of top-shelf personal protective equipment and a flagrant government dismissal of deaths in their ranks as a result of the shortage.

Why Commies Hate the 1619 Project
Real Clear Education, Ken Braun, May 11, 2020

The Times’s 100-page 1619 Project asserts that much of modern America (including health care policy, capitalism itself and more) to be a failed legacy of slavery. The project director told interviewers it was a conscious effort to advocate for slavery reparations. The New York Times editor said it was about pushing back against Trump.

But a handful of prominent historians—many with Ivy League affiliations who have already won Pulitzers for history—began telling the Socialist Equality Party’s World Socialist Web Site that 1619 was riddled with significant errors. Their criticisms grew to a chorus of at least 17 major academic names co-signed on two (so far unsuccessful) efforts to get the Times to retract the mistakes.

The Battle for America’s True Understanding of Itself
Hollywood in Toto, Jake Klein, May 27, 2020

In fact, the project’s foundational claim that enslaved Africans were first brought to America’s English colonies in 1619 was found to be false. Nell Irvin Painter, a professor emerita of American history at Princeton University, found that those early Africans were not enslaved but were rather indentured servants, and they joined a population of white European indentured servants in America. And famed Brown University historian Gordon Wood found the 1619 Project’s claim that the American Revolution began out of a desire by the colonists to preserve the slave trade was false as well. These are just two of many other serious errors in the project. So why are curricula being developed and a Pulitzer Prize being awarded to a journalism project with well-documented factual errors? Because ultimately the project does not rest on facts, it rests on narrative and tribalism.

Bid to Oust Southern Poverty Law Center as Amazon’s Charity Arbiter Defeated
Daily Signal, Fred Lucas, May 27, 2020

Most Amazon customers aren’t likely aware donations are based on the left-wing political leanings of one organization, said Scott Walter, president of the Capital Research Center, a nonprofit watchdog group that has investigated the SPLC. “Amazon’s continued reliance on the discredited SPLC means that a company most Americans assume is politically neutral is actually putting a thumb weighing billions of dollars on one side of the political scales,” Walter told The Daily Signal. “Amazon should go back to being a neutral business that isn’t intervening in America’s culture wars in this blatant way.” The Southern Poverty Law Center has been besieged by scandal and resignations over the past year or so regarding allegations of racial and gender discrimination and of widespread sexual harassment.

Voting by Mail in 2020 Would Create Chaos to Advantage Democrats”
The Federalist, Sarah Lee, May 26, 2020

What vote-by-mail and ballot harvesting would really do is federalize a state-based electoral system, opening it to huge risks for fraud and incompetence, and introducing something else Democrats tend to use when they find themselves desperate for a win: chaos. Many are already pointing out the potential fraud risk in using the U.S. Postal Service to conduct an election. The Heritage Foundation’s Hans von Spakovsky and Public Interest Legal Foundation’s J. Christian Adams point out that millions of ballots go missing and are never counted as complete votes under a vote-by-mail system.

Holder’s Gerrymandering
News Radio 790 with Bobby Gunther, Hayden Ludwig, May 15, 2020

Leftists Funders Dedicate Millions to Transform 2020 Elections
PJ Media, J. Christian Adams, May 1, 2020

The coronavirus pandemic has sparked a frantic effort by the left to deploy massive new funding streams and to activate new aggressive and transformative organizations. They are pushing for legislative changes such as federally-mandated vote-by-mail and the eradication of state election integrity laws, like absentee ballot witness signature requirements in Virginia. They are also using new sources of secretly-sourced millions to push media narratives and pay reporters to advocate for transformative election process changes. All of this transformative frenzy started with the virus and the opportunity it gave leftists to advocate for long-desired changes to how America conducts elections.
