Capital Research Center (CRC) is a non-profit investigative think tank and the leading source for information on left-wing/Progressive organizations and their donors. The Center examines how institutions of the left operate and analyzes their impact on our politics and society.

The Center was established in 1984 to promote a better understanding of charities and philanthropic organizations and of how groups and causes are “captured” by the Left and used to undermine Americans’ freedoms. CRC’s research and investigative journalism are grounded in principles of individual liberty, a free-market economy, and limited, constitutional government.

CRC’s specialty: “connecting the dots”—uncovering the links between nonprofit organizations, interest groups, and government policies—investigating and exposing extremism, corruption, cronyism, self-dealing, hypocrisy, and deception.

Under the leadership of a new president beginning in 2016, CRC’s work has expanded dramatically. In just three years, CRC has grown from 5 to 20+ full-time staff members, fundraising increased an average of 25 percent each year, and online audiences are into the tens of millions.  In addition to CRC’s print magazine, they have launched several new projects which are reaching tens of millions of people and staged to increase. Among these:

  • InfluenceWatch, a new website to serve as the encyclopedia of the Left. After two years, many of the organization’s pages are showing up on page 1 of Google searches, the website is reaching 500,000 users (and 1 million pageviews) this year, and InfluenceWatch profiles are receiving linkbacks from places like the New York Times and ABC News.
  • Dangerous Documentaries helped to produce No Safe Spaces, an upcoming feature-length film about America’s free speech crisis, particularly on college campuses.
  • CRC’s Center for Strategic Giving produced important research to show that charitable giving to policy organizations remains largely unchanged following the Citizens United decision, with the Left outspending the Right by a three-to-one margin.
  • Additional projects: CRC published the seminal book on the issue of donor intent, launched two other websites (designed to promote special reports on climate funding and the way the Left uses dark money), and produced 70 educational videos to promote our research to new audiences.
Managing Editor & Director of Content:

Building on these recent successes, CRC is looking for an exceptional editor with an eye for crafting compelling content and in-depth research products that expose the false liberal narrative.

This position reports to the Senior Vice President (department head of the Programs and Communications team). The Managing Editor & Director of Content will manage CRC’s print (magazine and special reports) and online (blog content, informational emails) communications. The position will also interface with CRC’s communications/outreach (targeting reporters/policymakers) and film/digital media (targeting the general public) staff.

Ideally this position will be based in CRC’s offices in Washington DC’s Dupont Circle neighborhood, however, a virtual office will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

  • Managing Editor
    • Identifying, editing, and managing the production of CRC’s print (primarily donor-focused) magazine-style publication, working closely with the SVP.
    • Closely and productively working with in-house investigative researchers/reporters and outside contributors who produce content for CRC, and mentoring junior CRC staff in strong writing, editing, and research practices.
    • Developing written content/articles (with writers) that surprise and inform, and editing those articles to the highest standard.
    • Line editing CRC products, including newsletters, outreach communications, and policy products in line with CRC’s editorial guidelines.
    • Researching and drafting research products, long-reads, or blog posts on issues related to journalism, media bias, or other issues as needed.
    • Writing/blogging for CRC as needed.
    • Potentially editing InfluenceWatch entries.
  • Director of Content:
    • Collaborating with other CRC staff (communications/policy outreach and video/digital media).
    • Identifying new writing talent and cultivating a community of writers and contributors who can produce strong content.
    • Crafting weekly email (targeting donors, reporters, and other policy professionals) promoting CRC’s content.
Education and Experience Required
  • 7+ years of experience in editing for a respected publication or equivalent experience in communications, media relations, journalism, public relations. Experience in a non-profit/think tank environment a plus.
  • Superb written and oral communications skills, and demonstrably strong editing skills. Experience communicating about public policy issues preferred.
  • Strong managerial and project management skills and ability to multi-task, set priorities, and follow-through.
  • High sense of urgency, and comfort working in a fast-paced growing environment.
  • A commitment to/passion for the principles of limited government, free markets, Constitutional government, and individual liberties.
  • A bachelor’s degree or higher. (Equivalent on-the-job experience will also count.)
  • Proficiency in MS Office is necessary (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • A great attitude, including a strong work ethic and a commitment to working on projects directly related to the mission of the Capital Research Center.
