Electoral College Day

Today former Illinois Senator Barack Obama will officially become president-elect of the United States as the members of the Electoral College meet in their respective state capitols to cast their ballots for president and vice president.

Meanwhile, Jonathan Soros, son of George Soros, makes a novel argument in the Wall Street Journal for circumventing the Electoral College without amending the Constitution. Of course his end-run around the amendment process requires a 50-state interstate compact, which might require even more effort to put together than simply amending the Constitution.

Soros wants to ensure that whoever wins the national popular vote becomes president. It’s a terrible idea and it’s not going to go anywhere but his essay raises some interesting points.
